During mass spectrometry (MS) sample preparation, scientists use solid phase extraction (SPE) columns to isolate target proteins via multiple steps. By combining several technologies into one multipurpose device like the Swiss Army knife, researchers can perform several MS sample preparation steps on a single SPE column and accelerate MS-based discovery.

NBE™ Columns: The Swiss Multifunction Tool for the Lab
Novel multiuse solutions take a little ingenuity but have a big impact.
Simplifying tools or processes into multiuse devices is a hallmark of efficient design. This ingenuity can save considerable time and make a lasting impact on the quality of life of the users.
AN ICON OF MULTIFUNCTIONALITY
From carving wood to opening bottles, a Swiss Army knife prepares its owner for the unexpected without needing a toolbox. Swiss Army knives come in hundreds of variations, including Wenger’s “The Giant”. With 87 tools and 141 different functions, it holds the record as the world’s most multifunctional penknife.
APPLYING MULTIFUNCTION DESIGN TO EXTRACTION SCIENCE!
Tecan’s all-in-one Narrow Bore Extraction™ (NBE™) columns provide Swiss Army-like multifunction solutions for mass spectrometry (MS) workflows. By combining a solid phase extraction (SPE) column and a reaction vessel in one revolutionary format, NBE columns allow scientists to complete multiple MS sample prep steps without additional tubes or plates. These automation-ready consumables enable cleaner extracts, lower solvent consumption, reduce errors, and improve reproducibility.
NARROW BORE EXTRACTION COLUMN
Reaction chamber enables in-column reactions
Filter for initial matrix clean-up
Air lock prevents sample dripping until positive pressure is applied
Microparticulate sorbents allow small sorbent bed sizes and high flow rates
Narrow bore outlet directs small elution volumes
PERFORMING MULTIPLE MASS SPECTROMETRY SAMPLE PREP STEPS WITH A SINGLE COLUMN
INPUTS AND ANALYTES OF INTEREST
NBE columns can accommodate a wide range of matrices and analytes. The filter cleans the matrix and captures large particulates, reducing sorbent overload. The microparticulate sorbents are available in various chemistries and polarities for different experimental needs.
FUNCTIONALITY
Using the reaction vessel, scientists can perform pre-SPE reaction steps, including incubation, hydrolysis, precipitation, and digestion while the airlock prevents sample dripping. They can then complete washing and eluting in the same column, saving time and preventing column waste.
ANALYZE
NBE columns’ microparticulate sorbents effectively retain analytes, enabling high yields and low elution volumes. These small volumes eluted from the narrow bore outlet contain high concentrations of ready-to-use analytes for MS analysis, helping researchers easily gather high quality MS data for accelerated discovery.
