Explained: How do autoimmune disorders arise?

At the frontline of an autoimmune attack are rogue immune cells turned foe against the body they were created to protect. Scientists study the complex etiology of autoimmune disorders to restore the broken balance.

The immune system relies on the ability of immune cells to distinguish the body’s cells from abnormal or foreign cells. When immune cells fail to make this distinction, they attack healthy tissues, leading to an autoimmune response. There are no known cures for autoimmune diseases (ADs). With advances in cell therapies and gene therapies, scientists are leveraging immune cells to develop novel therapeutic strategies to combat ADs.
