NEW YORK—Pfizer Inc. is also facing demands from three senators that the company produce documents about its deals with insurers to get them to cover Lipitor, which just started facing generic competition, rather than two generic versions. Pfizer has offered rebates to insurance plans and companies that require pharmacies to dispense Lipitor rather than generics for the next six months, and offered discounts to patients remaining on Lipitor so that their co-payments would be equal to or lower than those for generics. The company has repeatedly denied claims made in some media reports that the strategy will raise costs for health plan sponsors and employers. The senators sent a letter to Pfizer CEO Ian Reade, and gave Pfizer until Dec. 21 to provide documents on deals to block generic forms of Lipitor. MacKay Jimeson, a Pfizer spokesman, said the company will respond soon.
