Sekisui acquires Genzyme’s diagnostics business

OSAKA, Japan—Sekisui Chemical Co. Ltd. recently purchased the diagnostics products business of Genzyme for $265 million in cash. The purchase includes all assets of the business, including diagnostic product lines and technologies, as well as 575 employees who have been offered similar positions with Sekisui. The new Sekisui Diagnostics LLC division will operate out of Framington, Mass., Kent, The U.K., Prince Edward Island, Canada and Russelsheim, Germany. In connection with the sale, Sekisui also entered into a supply agreement to provide Genzyme with certain enzymes needed for the production of Cerezyme, a treatment for Gaucher disease. Genzyme said the divestiture is part of the company's ongoing effort to sharpen its focus on its key businesses. Genzyme also completed the sale of its genetic testing business in December.
